Overview

This unit recognises the role of the manager in understanding the past and forming visions for the future. It provides a multidimensional view on accounting and financial reporting, developing the skills needed to effectively use, analyse, and critique accounting information in key decisions. Emphasis will be placed on the consideration of key stakeholders, their information needs, and how financial accounting, management accounting, and data analytics can be used to understand business performance and evaluate potential opportunities. Financial accounting coverage will include the general purpose financial statements and develop an awareness of their components, preparation, and use in financial statement analysis. Management accounting will consider the application of cost accounting techniques to key strategic decisions within the organisation and their link to organisational strategy. This will emphasise key elements of planning and control, and the ability to integrate financial and managerial accounting information into the decision-making process. These accounting perspectives will be built around an awareness of data analytics and data visualisation techniques and how it can be applied within a business, as well as a wider and critical engagement with the ethical and social implications of accounting practices and technologies.
