Overview

This unit aims to teach the fundamentals of corporate finance, including valuation techniques, as well as introduce students to the world of capital markets. The unit will introduce students to the concept of the time value of money and the application of this idea to financial decision making. In addition, the unit focusses on valuation methods based on discounting cash flows, such as the NPV and IRR rules, their underlying assumptions and limitations, and the importance of identifying and using an appropriate discount rate. Application of time value is used and applied for valuing debt and equity securities. This leads into Markowitz portfolio theory and the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) which is a tool to value risky securities. Students will also be introduced to important content such as international finance, corporate governance, risk management including financial instruments and derivatives. No prior knowledge of finance is necessary.
