Overview
This unit provides you with the opportunity to work in teams to complete an integrated design project (IDP) which draws upon the knowledge and skills that you have developed throughout the course of your degree. It also includes instruction in the use of design software tools for 3D modelling, assembly, finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and design optimisation. Societal, health, safety, legal and cultural aspects will also be considered where appropriate.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
use industry-standard engineering software tools for design (CAD) and simulation (stress analysis, dynamics, fluid dynamics, optimisation) of complex engineering problems
- 2
design a product, process, service or resource that responds to an opportunity, meets a need, or solves a problem
- 3
reflect on teamwork, project management, leadership, and conflict resolution in the context of the group projects and activities
- 4
appraise societal, health, safety, legal and cultural aspects of an engineering project
- 5
interpret design regulations and requirements
- 6
communicate findings of design projects through written and oral forms
- 7
manage a design project, demonstrating optimal use of resources and delivering the desired outcomes within the given amount of time.
Workload and teaching
- Workshops12 hours
- Practical activities24 hours
- Laboratories20 hours
- Teaching approachProblem-based learning
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
