Overview

The unit introduces basic principles of business from an Islamic perspective. It provides an understanding of the importance of business and economic activities in Islam, and the ways of organising and managing such business and economic activities to satisfy broader societal and community expectations in an equitable and ethical manner. The unit encourages you to critically analyse and apply Islamic perspectives of entrepreneurial, financial, managerial, and marketing functions to satisfy the consumer and community needs of modern society. It also facilitates the understanding of the inseparable roles of science and business in satisfying consumer and community needs where joint initiatives from both sides can make significant contributions to societal well-being.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

This unit applies an active learning approach. There are pre and post lecture activities available on Moodle and the weekly lectures will be pre-recorded, in video format. Where possible, an industry and/or in-house guest speaker(s) live presentation and/or a workshop will be conducted during the lecture period. Whereas the weekly tutorials are live classes that involves discussion on the weekly topics.
