Overview

The unit will examine the effects of culture on the construction and experience of mental illness and the implications of cultural and community structures for the delivery of mental health services.
Major areas covered include explanatory models of mental illness, cultural and social factors shaping the mental health in the community with a focus on the mental health of Aboriginal, refugee, asylum seeker, and migrant communities in Australia, racism, and prejudice, cultural assumptions of standard methods of assessment and treatment, State mental health policy, psychiatric service utilisation, and gaps in current service provision.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Recognise and articulate the impact of refugee, asylum seeker and migration on mental health, and apply this to examining topical issues.

    Analyse and compare conceptions and experiences of mental health across different cultures and their effect on health seeking behaviour.

  3. 3

    Identify and demonstrate how assessment and treatment approaches are modified in response to clients’ cultural background.

  4. 4

    Examine gaps State and National policy context informing the provision mental health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD)  communities.

  5. 5

    Appraise the application of policy to specific mental health issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities, and identify gaps.

Workload and teaching

12 hours per week comprised of a mix of directed and self-directed learning plus attendance at 2 day block one weekend per semester.2 Day Block Weekend tutorials comprised of 2.5-5 hours tutorial per unit (depending on student cohort size) and attendance at keynote lectures.
