Overview

This unit introduces you to the foundational knowledge required by midwives to effectively care for women and their babies from preconception through to early parenting.

You will explore the fundamental clinical skills required for contemporary midwifery practice in a variety of settings.

Learning will also focus on the physiological and psychosocial adaptation of the healthy woman and child, and the application of this understanding to the provision of woman centred midwifery care.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Explain in depth the normal maternal anatomical and physiological adaptations relevant to pregnancy, labour, birth and the puerperium;

  2. 2

    Apply the theoretical knowledge of the normal anatomical and physiological adaptations during pregnancy to describe a woman-centred approach pivotal to midwifery practice for women of all cultural backgrounds;

  3. 3

    Explain the role of the midwife in assessment of foetal and maternal well-being during pregnancy, labour, birth and the puerperium;

  4. 4

    Recognise the importance of using evidence to inform clinical practice and implement developing clinical midwifery skills in the appraisal of mother and baby during pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum;

  5. 5

    Describe the midwifery skills required to provide comprehensive physical and psychosocial assessments when providing maternity care for women and their babies across the childbearing continuum;

  6. 6

    Differentiate the difference between screening and diagnostic tests and list the routine screening and basic diagnostic tests in pregnancy, labour and birth assessment;

  7. 7

    Explain the need for reflective practice in the implementation of evidence informed care;

  8. 8

    Demonstrate developing midwifery competence based upon Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife standards for practice and Code of conduct for midwives, and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Code of ethics for midwives.

4 hours of teacher directed study per week, including lectures, tutorials and clinical learning environment sessions:  Total 40 hours
Self-directed study: 152 hours
Clinical placement with clinical placement report: 80 hours
Continuity of Care Experience clinical hours (2X CoCE): 40 hours
Total: 312 hours.

You must attend a minimum of 80% of all scheduled Clinical Learning Environment activities and 100% of the scheduled Clinical Placement. A medical certificate must be provided for all absences.
