Overview

This unit introduces you to the concepts of health and wellbeing and preventing disease and illness as they relate to global, public and primary health in nursing and midwifery practice. 
You will explore health and illness; global and population health; and social and environmental impacts on the health of people. In addition, constructs relating to the sustainable development goals; health promotion and health screening will be investigated.
You will apply research evidence through a sustainability lens to understand the impacts of planetary change, in terms of global health challenges.
These concepts will be explored in the context of the role of the nurse and midwife to optimise health outcomes for women and their families.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Examine the Australian healthcare system in terms of service provision, funding and health policy, comparing health systems across the world;

    Analyse the principles and philosophies of global, public and primary health in promoting equity and access within healthcare systems whilst engaging in safe respectful maternity care;

    Analyse the strengths and limitations of using key health indicator data to improve health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and women from diverse populations;

  4. 4

    Describe key concepts in global, public and primary health research and demonstrate research literacy skills in searching, critiquing and applying evidence;

  5. 5

    Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of planetary change on women and their families including globalisation, migration, climate change, pandemics, and environmental sustainability;

  6. 6

    Demonstrate developing clinical competence based upon the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife standards for practice and Code of conduct for midwives, and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) International Code of Ethics for Midwives.
