Accounting 101 is an introduction to fundamental concepts, principles, and methods in accounting. You will be provided with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue further studies in the field of accounting at a tertiary education level.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

Define accounting elements and explain some of generally accepted accounting principles and qualitative characteristics of financial information

Using double entry rules, to record accounting transactions for both a service business and a trading business in the general journal and post to general ledger

Prepare the adjusting entries at the end of the accounting period (accruals, prepayments, depreciation and inventory loss)

Record closing entries for temporary accounts

Prepare classified financial statements - income statement, cash flow statement and the balance sheet

Analyse and interpret financial information using profitability, liquidity and solvency ratios

Prepare budgeted financial statements and complete cash variance reports
