Overview

This unit focuses on the essential knowledge required for adequate performance as a clinician or professional in your own discipline    working  in a mental health setting or with people with lived experience of mental health issues and illness. The unit will describe how a comprehensive psychiatric assessment is undertaken, the use of structured instruments and specific assessment issues that arise in different clinical scenarios. The unit examines the theoretical framework and management of a range of mental health disorders seen in the adult population, and provides an introduction to developmental disorders.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Discuss the contemporary meaning of mental health and illness and critically reflect on the diagnosis and classification of mental illnesses.

    Document a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment of a person living with a psychiatric illness.

    Compare and select structured assessment tools for use in various mental health care settings.

    Differentiate the common signs and symptoms of mental illnesses and the challenges faced by people living with a mental illness.

    Integrate a high level of discipline specific knowledge to develop a comprehensive biopsychosocial evidence-based plan of care for a range of psychiatric presentations seen in contemporary mental health care settings.

    Critically appraise cited evidence and recent clinical developments relevant to mental health care.

Workload and teaching

12 hours per week comprised of a mix of directed and self-directed learning plus attendance at 2 day block one weekend per semester.2 Day Block Weekend tutorials comprised of 2.5-5 hours tutorial per unit (depending on student cohort size) and attendance at keynote lectures.
