Corequisites: Only available to students enrolled in: Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Emergency Health (Paramedic) or Bachelor of Nursing Practice.
Overview
This elective unit provides students with an introduction to maternity and paediatric nursing.
Students will explore the roles and responsibilities of the nurse in supporting care of women and their families throughout the childbearing process. Emphasis is on normal pregnancy and postpartum care of mother and baby.
Students will be introduced to concepts related to paediatric nursing.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

1. Identify roles and responsibilities of health professionals in the care of childbearing women, neonates, children & adolescents.

2. Outline key aspects of the assessment and care of the woman and baby during the antenatal, perinatal and postnatal periods.

3. Describe a systematic approach to paediatric assessment that reflects changes in growth, development and anatomy and physiology differences.

4. Analyse a variety of communication skills to effectively engage and interact with children, their families and the multidisciplinary health care team

5. Discuss the impact of hospitalization on the child and family and identify strategies, including family centred care, to support families through the experience.

6. Identify appropriate management, prevention and health promotion strategies for common childhood illness/injury.
Workload and teaching

Four (4) hours per week for 8 weeks comprising a mixture of tutorials and clinical learning environment sessions (32 hours)
Student directed learning: 124 hours including Moodle books and activities prior to and post teacher directed learning sessions
