Overview

This unit builds on Contemporary Nursing Practice 1 & 2 and will introduce you to working with people experiencing mental health conditions. You will further develop clinical nursing skills to engage in meaningful therapeutic relationships with people experiencing various mental health conditions, their carers, families and supporters.
You will develop the knowledge and skills required for person-centred mental health assessment and care planning to promote and support mental health recovery.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Examine factors that impact a person’s mental health while acknowledging barriers to receiving care, such as stigma, cultural, age, and gender related issues.

    Apply relevant mental health legislation when caring for people with mental health conditions.

  3. 3

    Develop nursing skills to plan care to support optimal mental health outcomes for persons, their families, carers and supporters.

  4. 4

    Conduct and communicate fundamental mental health assessments of persons who are experiencing mental health conditions.

  5. 5

    Demonstrate practice at a beginning level in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered nurse standards for practice, Code of conduct for nurses and the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Code of ethics for nurses.
