Overview

Psychotherapy or ‘talking therapy’ is an essential component of the mental health nurses’ role.  In order to effectively guide people with lived experience of mental illness in their recovery journey, the mental health nurse must possess both an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of psychotherapy, as well as an ever-evolving ‘tool-box’ of evidence-based therapeutic interventions.

This unit will give you a broad overview of the theoretical foundations of various approaches to psychotherapy: including psychoanalytical, humanistic and cognitive behavioural.  The requirements for positive psychotherapy outcomes will be explored using a common factor lens. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own approach to psychotherapy and how you could incorporate contemporary practices into your current practice.
