Overview

Mental health nursing is a speciality area which requires mental health nurses to have an understanding of their unique role and identity. This identity is underpinned by theories and philosophies relevant to mental health nursing practice. An understanding of these concepts, supports mental health nurses to work collaboratively with consumers.

You will develop knowledge related to the core values that underpin the work of mental health nurses in working in partnership with consumers. You will develop your understanding of the role of the mental health nurse in establishing and maintaining relationships in order to contribute to a therapeutic and supportive environment. The application of mental health nursing processes in respect to best practice, care planning and outcome evaluation will be explored.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Critically discuss the relevance of mental health nursing theories and philosophies to contemporary mental health nursing practice and identity.

    Determine the core values of mental health nursing and the relevance to practice in working with consumers, families, carers and supporters.

    Critically discuss recovery-oriented principles and the way in which these support consumer self-determination, inclusiveness, nurturance, growth and development and shared decision making.

  4. 4

    Describe how the mental health nurse influences the environment in which the consumer is receiving care with consideration to supporting safety, the promotion of wellness and advocacy for people in their recovery.

  5. 5

    Distinguish between different nursing interventions that can be utilised to support the development of therapeutic relationships in mental health practice.

  6. 6

    Justify the relevance of, and apply nursing theory in the development of comprehensive and evidence-based mental health nursing care plans to support consumers in their recovery.
