Overview
Interventional cardiology is an important area of cardiac nursing. To provide safe, quality care, interventional cardiology nurses require specific technological skills and knowledge to ensure patient safety. It is imperative that interventional cardiology nurses can engage with relevant technology and possess sufficient pathophysiology knowledge of cardiac conditions. Patients requiring care from interventional cardiology nurses are diverse, ranging from low acuity to critically ill requiring life-saving interventions.
In this unit you will explore the role of interventional cardiology nurses, both working in and managing, cardiac catheterisation laboratory environments. You will also explore patient assessment, interventional options and equipment used in the laboratory, managing patient transitions through the unit and advanced nursing practice in this unique cardiac care setting. This unit also involves you developing knowledge and skills that will enable the student to provide support for patients and significant others in the catheter laboratory and will explore the role of interventional cardiology nurses in the multidisciplinary team.
