Co-requisite: Must be enrolled in M6031 and any co-requisite in unit set PAEDNURS03 (Paediatric Nursing Specialisation).

Must be working at least 3 days per week in a paediatric setting at an approved provider.

Overview

Paediatric nursing requires specialised skills and understanding of advanced paediatric pathophysiology, systematic assessment, management, and care.
This unit provides you with the opportunity to apply advanced paediatric nursing principles and practice to the care of children with complex conditions.  You will develop knowledge and skills to assess and care for the seriously ill and/or deteriorating child or young person. The importance of health promotion and illness prevention to provide safe and quality care, in collaboration with parents/caregivers will be explored.  The concepts associated with transition to adult or community-based services, palliative and end-of-life care will also be discussed. 
Your study will include elements of clinical leadership including the role of the advanced practice nurse in optimising quality outcomes and in applying relevant ethical, legal and socio-cultural principles influencing patient and family centred care for children and young people.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Critically analyse the principles of systematic patient assessment based on an advanced knowledge of paediatric anatomy and physiology.

    Implement advanced nursing practice principles required to manage children and young people with complex disease states.

    Critically analyse concepts related to assessment of the seriously ill or deteriorating child and young person.

    Respond to the seriously ill and deteriorating child or young person using advanced practice nursing knowledge and skills.

    Evaluate the effectiveness of health promotion and illness prevention strategies for common paediatric presentations including illnesses, injury and chronic illness.

    Implement effective quality transitions in care for children, young people and their families between different levels of care and different health, and social and community care services.

    Implement inclusive end of life care for children and families, including those from diverse communities.

    Apply the skills and knowledge required to effectively and collaboratively undertake interdisciplinary team-based care across a variety of healthcare settings.

    Assess clinical leadership readiness and related skill sets of paediatric nurses in practice.

    Evaluate the clinical impacts produced through leadership strategies in paediatric nursing contexts.

Workload and teaching

A total of 24 hours teaching and student-directed study/week. Teacher directed study includes online learning activities and tutorials in flexible delivery (on-campus or on-line). Tutorials will involve 7 x 8 hour sessions during the semester. Must be working at least 3 days per week in a paediatric setting.
