Overview

Paediatric nursing requires specialised skills and understanding of paediatric pathophysiology, management and care.
This unit provides an introduction to advanced paediatric nursing principles and practice. You will develop skills to care for children, young people and their families using a patient and family centred approach. Key factors associated with managing risks and providing evidence-based care to paediatric patients across their journey from initial presentation to recovery will be explored.
Your study will include paediatric assessment, the care and management of paediatric patients, family centred care, stabilisation and management of the seriously ill or deteriorating child.
Examination of the role of nurses in different contexts of paediatric nursing will also be investigated including working within the interdisciplinary team.

    Evaluate the effectiveness of health promotion and illness prevention strategies for common childhood illnesses,    injury and chronic illness.

    Apply advanced paediatric nursing and decision making skills to plan, prioritise, implement and evaluate effective nursing care.

    Critically analyse skills and knowledge required to effectively and collaboratively undertake interdisciplinary team-based care across a variety of healthcare settings.

Workload and teaching

A total of 24 hours teaching directed and student directed study/week.
Teacher directed study includes online learning activities and tutorials in flexible delivery (on-campus or on-line). Tutorials will involve 7 x 8 hour sessions during the semester.
Must be working at least 0.6 FTE in a paediatric setting.
