Overview

The unit will enhance nurse and midwife's skill and knowledge when working with people from a refugee background.

Nurses and midwives will explore current gaps in health services and ways to advocate for refugees within the context of their community and through an analysis of the socio-political aspects of the refugee context.

An in-depth exploration of the effects of torture and trauma on the health and health care of refugees provides further understanding of the refugee experience. The unit includes skill development in refugee health assessment and responding to issues of health literacy, organisation and community capacity building and evaluation of refugee health and wellbeing.

This unit has been developed in partnership with The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture and the State Wide Facilitator Refugee Health Program.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Critically examine primary health care and service co-ordination practices within the refugee context

    Understand the impact of torture and trauma on refugee populations and the Australian health care system

    Analyse approaches to cultural responsiveness, health literacy and consumer participation within the refugee context

    Identify nursing skills required for refugee health assessment and care within the individual and family context

  6. 6

    Recognise and develop professional boundaries and skills to assist the nurses and midwives when working with refugees.

Workload and teaching

12 hours per week comprising guided readings, online and other activities and /or tutorials, including self-directed learning.
