Synopsis
This unit which is a part of the sequence of units comprising Theme 1 – Foundation of Medical, Food and Nutritional Sciences will incorporate a systems approach to understanding the human body. It is closely aligned with the unit “Fundamentals of Biomedical Sciences” to develop a sound understanding of bodily functions in nutrition. The unit will examine the metabolism of macro and micronutrients and the role of nutrition in cell growth and the formation of body systems in physiological and pathological states. The Integration of biochemical pathways and the concepts of its modulation by various diets will be discussed to emphasize the clinical relevance of biochemistry in nutrition and its relation to maintaining growth and health. The unit will emphasise the roles of immune system and pharmacological concepts in relation to interactions of nutrition with physiological processes. The relationship between genetics and nutritional disorders will also be explored.
