Overview
This unit introduces the principles of genetics and nutritional immunology and their roles in human health and disease. You will analyse the impact of genetic principles on selected nutrition-related diseases and disorders across the lifespan, including the influence of gene expression and epigenetic mechanisms in disease prevention. The unit examines the role and interactions of the innate and adaptive immune system in maintaining physiological homeostasis and protecting against disease. You will also evaluate the effects of macronutrients and micronutrients on immune and inflammatory functions in disease prevention. Through learning and discussions, you will develop an understanding of the interactions between genetic principles, nutrition, and immune function, and apply this knowledge to inform nutrition practice and disease prevention, and to support optimal health outcomes in public health care.
