Overview
In this unit, you will learn about psychological theory and research relevant to the practice of occupational therapy, including sensation and perception, cognition, emotion, personality, mental disorders, and social psychology.
Grounded in a biopsychosocial model of health and wellbeing, your lectures and tutorials will give you an overview of the major psychological approaches e.g. biological, evolutionary, psychodynamic, developmental, behavioural, cognitive, and humanistic, and how each provides insight into the challenges and issues experienced by individuals, carers, families, and communities. This unit also introduces the methods of inquiry and assumptions of theory associated with the science of psychology.
The relevance of the discipline of psychology to occupational therapy thinking and practice is emphasised. Workshops and assessments will provide you the opportunity to apply this knowledge by reading psychological research and using it to inform occupational therapy practice and client education.
