Overview
In this unit you will learn about assessment and intervention in advanced paediatric therapy for children aged 0-6 years with delays or disabilities and their families, in childcare/preschool, clinical, educational, home, and community settings.
Family-centred practice, child focussed and routines-based assessment and interventions will underpin the unit. Family culture and diversity will be central to enabling the participation of children in key daily activities (e.g. self-care, play, sleep, social participation, productivity). Ethical, policy and legal issues related to early intervention will be critiqued to provide you with strong foundations to practice.
A range of assessments appropriate for use with young children will be reviewed and evidence-based interventions that translate into practice investigated in detail. Interventions that address parenting practices, family wellbeing, assistive technology, accessible environments and childhood transitions will be critiqued.
Collaborative practice that promotes inclusion and participation of young children within home, education, and community settings will be prioritised.
This unit will focus on key issues such as school and service transitions, transport, and the child’s ability to manage the requirements of different daily living environments.
