Overview

This unit introduces the fundamentals of project management applicable to all projects and examines the core concepts and applied techniques for effective management of projects. It provides an introduction to the importance of project management, organisational strategy, and project selection and prioritisation. Organisational capabilities are explored within the context of projects, including structure, culture and roles, project life cycle and organisation, and developing project-related product or service descriptions to charter a project.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    summarise the essential components of a project and the processes that are considered essential to its successful implementation

    evaluate and recommend an appropriate project management strategy for a new project to meet stakeholder expectations in a given organisational context.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week, inclusive of the block workshops. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

This unit includes problem-based learning approaches, where you engage in research, integrate theory and practice and apply knowledge and skills to develop viable solutions in response to a problem or set of problems.
