Overview

This unit examines the artist's book, considering all aspects of the production and design of the book. You will consider the book as an object or sculptural form. You will investigate the principles of typography and book design, and learn how to set and print type using letterpress methods. You will consider the relationship of image and text, the question of sequence in the structure of the book, the relationship of form and content. The unit will consider the presentation and distribution of the artist's book looking at both historical and contemporary examples. Occupational health and safety instruction relevant to the Artists' Books studio will be addressed.

12 hours per week including 4 contact hours plus 8 hours of independent study.

Individual and group tutorials will develop critical skills and peer review.

Thematic projects, configured to address the production and contemporary context of artist-made books, will support students to develop conceptual, practical and creative skills.

The unit covers various aspects of the production and design of the artist book in the context of the fine art printmaking studio. Technical skills in printmaking methods will be demonstrated in class time and detailed in handouts, leading to studio-based production of works.
