Overview

This unit introduces the history, principles, and processes of test development. It covers concepts of test reliability and validity and some quantitative methods used to determine psychometric properties of tests. Throughout the unit, you will learn about the theoretical and conceptual basis of quantitative methods in psychological science, and you will apply these principles to further your understanding of psychological testing and assessment.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Explain the theoretical and conceptual basis of quantitative methods in psychological sciences, and apply these principles to psychological testing and assessment.

    Apply practical and theoretical knowledge of the scale development and psychometric evaluation processes including  the principles of test reliability and validity and the quantitative methods used to evaluate reliability and validity.

    Critically evaluate a range of factors that influence the development and delivery of psychometric instruments that are considered by psychologists when selecting assessment tools.

  4. 4

    Apply the diverse applications of psychological tests and assessments to a range of psychologically relevant careers.

    Identify and describe the psychological tests designed to measure intelligence.
