Prerequisite: Completed Bachelors Degree and a major sequence in psychology approved by the Australian Psychological Society or qualification assessed as equivalent by the Australian Psychological Society, with a distinction average for third year psychology units.

Corequisite: Must be enrolled in an Undergraduate Degree

Overview

The aim of this unit is to provide students with an applied understanding of statistics and data science methods commonly used in Psychological Sciences.

The unit has an applied focus and emphasises learning both the theory and interpretation of statistics as well as the practical application of statistics and data management through software (data science).

The content is contextualised through applied problems and examples from Psychological Science research to help students understand how the tools can be used to support professional psychologists and research.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Critique psychological science research data presentation and analysis steps.

    Identify an appropriate analysis technique for different types of data to answer question in psychological science.

    Apply software tools from data science to manage and explore data.

  4. 4

    Analyse data using modern software tools.

    Interpret results from statistical analyses.

Workload and teaching

3 hour workshop per week covering theory and software applications. The expected undirected/private study to be completed by students will be approximately 9 hours a week. This will incorporate students completing regular exercises to gain familiarity with software tools, readings, and preparation and completion of the assessments.
