Overview

In this unit, you will develop a strong foundation in psychopathology, with a focus on the core clinical skills required for effective mental health practice: clinical assessment, formulation, and diagnosis of high prevalence mental health conditions. There is a strong emphasis on developing and practicing your clinical interview skills, assessing mental status and risk, and the associated ethical considerations in clinical practice. Throughout the unit, you will participate in a range of learning and teaching activities such as lectures, workshops, clinical skills practice, and reflection exercises. These activities are designed to prepare you for the clinical placement units and professional engagement with the community.

Learning outcomes

    Develop and apply assessment and diagnostic skills to conduct a psychiatric clinical interview and concurrent mental status examination.

    Evaluate ethical considerations that inform professional behaviour during clinical interviews.

    Synthesise information and observations from the clinical setting into a concise and accurate written evaluation.

    Describe and discuss major classes of psychiatric illness based primarily on DSM 5 nosology and emerging trends for diagnosis.

    Conclude a diagnosis and initial formulation of high prevalence and selected low prevalence mental health disorders based on clinical interview.

    Develop reflective capacity and critical analysis of clinical assessment and interviewing skills that underpins continuous learning and ongoing professional development.

Eleven seminars of three hours for a total of 33 hours.

One asynchronous applied session of two hours that utilises video resources of clinical interviews focused on mental status examination, assessment of risk, and high prevalence disorders. This material will consolidate learning from synchronous delivery.

Preparation / self-directed study: One hour per week for seminars, two hours for the applied session and twelve hours preparation for assessment tasks.
