Overview

The practice of psychology is evidence-based, utilising a scientist-practitioner model. A psychologist makes their therapeutic decisions by integrating the best current research evidence with their clinical expertise and the unique values, preferences, and circumstances of the client. For this, they require competence in critically analysing research literature and understanding appropriate research methodologies. This unit will help you develop this skill set, culminating in the submission of a research report. You will conduct a research project on relevant mental health issues under the guidance of an academic supervisor.

Throughout the unit, you will be provided with key seminars and workshops to offer additional support and guidance. You will learn how to address ethical concerns and manage risks while collecting data for your research. You will gain an understanding of how research findings can be translated into policy, applied knowledge, and improved treatments, while also developing essential research communication skills across various media for diverse audiences. In this unit, you will analyse either primary or secondary data, interpret the results, and communicate them in written and oral formats to audiences, including academics, psychologists, and non-psychologists.
