Overview

PTY1011 is an integrated unit based on the five themes of the physiotherapy curriculum.

  • Theme 1: Personal and professional development focuses on development of personal and professional attributes that assist transition from student to physiotherapist.
  • Theme 2: Population, Society and Health addresses broader society and population health issues.
  • Theme 3: Fundamental Knowledge of Health Sciences provides the knowledge which underpins physiotherapy practice.
  • Theme 4: Applied practice develops clinical competencies integral to physiotherapy practice.
  • Theme 5: Research focuses on the ability to locate, interpret and evaluate research as a foundation for evidence based practice.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Work collaboratively in interdisciplinary learning groups, and recognise the factors which determine effective teamwork;

    Identify the key ethical and legal principles that underpin health care policy and practice;

    Develop tertiary level skills in professional communication including report and record writing.

    Reflect on your own values and assumptions regarding health and well-being and apply basic ethical principles to health situations;

    Explain the influence of diverse definitions, concepts and interpretations of health and well-being on health care;

    Compare and contrast various health models and outline basic health promotion principles;

    Identify the various determinants of health and describe how these affect health care provision and create inequalities in health;

    Discuss key global health issues, including climate change and their impact on health;

  10. 10

    Discuss the history, diversity and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (including the impact of colonisation on their health) and apply appropriate communication techniques with clients from this background.

    Apply knowledge of the anatomy, biomechanics and kinesiology of the lower limb to physiotherapy assessment and management;

    Describe the physiology of the musculoskeletal system;

  13. 13

    Describe the pathophysiological response to injury and disease of the musculoskeletal system, and relate this to appropriate physiotherapy management;;

  14. 14

    Articulate and apply theories supporting the use of external cooling and superficial heating for the management of musculoskeletal conditions.

  15. 15

    Apply fundamental knowledge of health sciences to complete a physiotherapy assessment of the lower limb, including medico-legal documentation of findings;

  16. 16

    Apply fundamental knowledge of health sciences to determine and perform appropriate physiotherapy management, including monitoring its effectiveness and utilising re-assessment findings to modify practice;

  17. 17

    Maintain a safe and effective simulated workplace, and minimise risk to both therapist and client;

  18. 18

    Demonstrate ethical principles, respect and understanding of patient needs in communication with patients, care givers and the multidisciplinary team to a simulated clinical situation.

  19. 19

    Explain the role that different levels of evidence have in determining the evaluation of the effectiveness of health care;

  20. 20

    Determine the strengths and weaknesses of different study designs (both qualitative and quantitative), and explain the impact of bias on study outcomes;

  21. 21

    Describe the role of outcome measures in the assessment and monitoring of health outcomes;

  22. 22

    Create answerable clinical questions and design electronic searches to find the best evidence to answer the question.

- 9-10 hours of lectures, seminars and workshops.

- 12 hours of tutorials including small group Case Based Learning; applied anatomy; clinical skills sessions; interprofessional education; physiology and research sessions.  

- You will also be expected to undertake private study and preparation in addition to assigned self-directed study related to the material in the unit manual and further required reading.
