Overview

You will broaden your clinical knowledge and develop skills in the analysis of radiographic images in this unit. You will gain  fundamental knowledge and understanding that underpins further study in this arena. Your fundamental skill development in image evaluation and interpretation through a focus on the application of a methodical approach will be supported in this unit. You will learn to apply the psychophysics of visual perception and pattern recognition to reduce interpretation error.

You will also learn to distinguish abnormalities from the appearances of normal anatomy and anatomical variants on radiographic images in the musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems and the abdomen.

You will gain an appreciation of clinical decision-making processes and the role of imaging referrals in patient management and enable you to apply constructive interprofessional communication skills in the acute and non-acute care settings.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Apply a systematic and methodological approach to radiographic image interpretation.

    Evaluate the quality of radiographs to ensure diagnostic accuracy.

    Differentiate knowledge of normal radiographic anatomy and normal variants as applicable to radiographs of the musculoskeletal system, chest and abdomen.

    Reduce interpretation errors through application of the principles of psychophysics of visual perception and pattern recognition.

    Distinguish between sensitivity and specificity and other measures of diagnostic accuracy and error when evaluating radiographs.

    Implement appropriate interprofessional communication strategies when describing radiographic findings.
