Overview
This unit provides a practical context for natural resources engineering in the global environment. Natural resource engineers improve and maintain the sustainability of the earth's resources through efficient design and application of technology. This unit identifies the extent and capacity of engineers working in the resources and renewable energy industries. Key concepts associated with natural resources and renewable energy industries are introduced and discussed.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Appreciate the global contribution of the natural resources sector to global economic and social development.
- 2
Describe the current and future global energy supply and demand profile and the efficiency and sustainability of current energy sources.
- 3
Identify and select clean and renewable alternatives for efficient and sustainable energy options.
- 4
Describe the development and permitting requirements for a natural resources project.
Workload and teaching
- Lectures24 hours
- Practical activities36 hours
- Teaching approachActive learning
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 4-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-8 hours independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
Integrated lecture and practice. While it is conventional to run lecture and practice classes separate from each other, for this unit both are delivered in an integrated mode to ensure high turn up in both lecture and practice classes. In other words, every session involves some portion of lecture and practice due to its specific mode of delivery.
The unit involves many descriptive information due to its nature, which is an overview of resources engineering. So the practical classes are mainly involved in re-emphasising descriptive information.
