Overview
Combining together the knowledge of different energy technologies, both renewable and conventional, plus the electrical transmission and distribution systems that link them and the load centres together, this unit guides you through the process of designing and modelling the Australian Electricity Market of the future. You will examine the resources available in terms of quality and variation in time and space, and how the variations correlate with demand for electricity. The role of energy storage technologies and demand-side management will also form a critical part of the modelling approach.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
describe the function of the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM), including the dispatch of power onto the grid, transmission and distribution systems, and the economics of the market
- 2
analyse the renewable energy resources available (wind, solar, hydro, bioenergy, geothermal)
- 3
analyse the costs of the variety of energy conversion technologies, both renewable and fossil fuel
- 4
design and execute a model of the NEM using an optimisation technique to find the least cost combination of technologies and transmission assets.
Workload and teaching
2 hours lectures, 3 hours of practical classes and 7 hours of private study per week.
