Person centred care and professional practice

SPH1004

Synopsis

This unit is designed to build your knowledge about essential principles of assessment and treatment planning in speech pathology practices. You will discuss the impact of communication and swallowing problems on a person’s ability to participate in everyday life.

You will learn to apply the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework to interpret communication and swallowing impairments. This approach will help you move beyond isolated symptoms and consider the broader context of an individual’s activities and participation in everyday life.

You will develop the ability to formulate intervention goals that are functional and person-centred. You will explore how personal factors, family dynamics, and community resources influence therapy planning and goal achievement. Through your knowledge of these contextual influences, you will be able to apply interventions that are realistic and meaningful for the individuals and their families.

You will also be introduced to the principles of different rehabilitation frameworks, which underpin effective intervention strategies.

Finally, you will focus on strategies that promote the transfer of communication and swallowing skills from the therapy setting into real-life environments. Through various workshop activities, you will begin translating theoretical knowledge into evidence-informed speech pathology practice.
