Overview

This unit extends your knowledge and understanding of social work assessment and intervention principles developed in first year of your studies.  The unit will provide you with a structured introduction to social work practice with groups and communities.
You will learn how theory informs effective group and community focussed social work practice. The unit will explore social therapeutic, psychosocial educational group work and community level assessments and interventions. 
Throughout the unit you will be provided with the opportunity to develop and practice group facilitation skills and to demonstrate critical thinking regarding the policy and political context of group and community work.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Articulate major concepts and theories informing group and community work in social work practice.

    Differentiate between psychosocial education and therapeutic group work and community development interventions and the implications for social work practice.

    Use appropriate group facilitation methods in the context of social work intervention at therapeutic, psychosocial education and community development level practice.

    Illustrate how to manage power relations and conflict in groups through demonstrated facilitation skills and critical reflection on their group participation.

    Critically evaluate your role within a group setting and manage group dynamics.

  6. 6

    Identify and discuss community development principles, practices, values and contemporary debates used to bring about social change.

    Use core skills in community development practice to identify community strengths and enhance community empowerment, ownership, participation and collective action.

    Plan a community work intervention in ways that consider common community development challenges, such as social exclusion, poverty and geographical disadvantage.

Workload and teaching

This unit uses a blended learning approach comprising 12 hours of teacher directed learning activities.  There will be weekly pre-class online learning activities to be completed prior to the on-campus teacher directed classes which will include tutorials, structured simulations and role play classes with actors. Each week students will be invited to complete teacher directed post - class online learning activities. 
It is expected that students will engage in up to 12 hours per week of self- directed learning activities.

Off-campus students will participate in a 3 day residential workshop.  In addition, they will be provided with up to 12 hours of teacher directed and prepared learning activities. Students will be expected to engage in up to 12 hours per week of self- directed learning activities.
