Overview

In this unit you will be introduced to the key concepts and principles informing contemporary social work policy and practice in mental health through a lens of recovery-oriented practice, lived experience engagement and relational recovery.  Mental health is conceptualised in dynamic and innovative ways that reflect and encourage changing perceptions, theoretical understandings and possibilities during this transition time in the field and society. You will explore dimensions such as culture, gender, class and spirituality on the conceptualisation of mental health and illness, empowerment, capacity and capability. You will also have the opportunity to examine the notion of risk as an underlying tension in social work practice in this field.
