Overview

This unit provides an in-depth study of the topics in common engineering, such as knowledge representation, reasoning, learning by experience and evolutionary system that serves as the foundations of artificial intelligence, declarative programming and the design of any intelligent system. The topic covers theory, design problem and applications of knowledge representation and reasoning using Fuzzy Logic System, fuzzy clustering, neuro-fuzzy modelling, machine learning in ANNs, such as supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning strategies with various algorithms. Also, introduction to deep learning, techniques and applications and evolutionary computation such as optimisation algorithms, simulated annealing and genetic algorithms. Modern tools will be used to evaluate the above AI techniques and synthesise solutions to practical examples.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

To design and develop a fuzzy knowledge-based intelligent machine using the human sense of linguistic & decision-making.

  2. 2

To design, build and train the Artificial Neural Network to solve a variety of multi-disciplinary engineering and business problems.

  3. 3

To recap the differences between machine and deep learning techniques and to solve big data in a variety of application using deep learning techniques.

  4. 4

To evaluate, synthesise and predict solutions using above AI techniques using Modern tools.

Workload and teaching

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 4-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-8 hours independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
