Enrolment rules

Students need to have completed and passed a minimum of 96 credit points in an undergraduate Science Discipline programme prior to enrolling in this unit.

Overview

In this unit, you will develop and demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the molecular, cellular and pathophysiological pathways involved in neuroscience as they relate to a broad range of neurological disorders. Discipline-specific topics relating to neurological disorders will include epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and other neuroinflammatory conditions, neuroophthalmology, headache and pain, neuroimaging, neuromuscular disorders, Parkinson’s Disease, dementing disorders, neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric disorders, brain tumours, stroke and traumatic brain injury/spinal cord injury. By developing a fundamental understanding of the pathogenic molecular and cellular changes in specific neurological disorders you will develop a contextual basis from which to identify patient outcomes, justify the use of appropriate technologies to answer patient-specific neurological disorders and evaluate pathways to translate neuroscience research findings into clinical practice.

This unit will consist of online specialist lectures delivered by researchers and clinicians actively working in the neuroscience discipline, and eLearning resources. You will review and evaluate clinical and scientific literature in neurological disorders with a focus on clinical and translational medicine perspectives, and present this information in written form, and via oral presentations. This unit will provide you with an in-depth clinical and translational research knowledge base to generate cutting-edge research questions, and to develop the ability to undertake inquiry-based research.
