Enrolment rules

Students need to have completed and passed a minimum of 96 credit points in an undergraduate Science Discipline programme prior to enrolling in this unit.

Overview

In this unit, you will develop and demonstrate in-depth knowledge of haematological diseases, a diverse range of conditions affecting the constituents of blood and blood-forming organs. Discipline-specific topics will include diseases of the blood and its components including haemophilia, anaemia, thrombosis, and blood cancers such as leukemia, myeloma and lymphoma. Developing a fundamental understanding of the molecular and cellular changes in specific haematological diseases will provide a contextual basis to identify patient outcomes, justify the use of appropriate technologies to answer patient-specific haematological problems and evaluate pathways to translate haematological research findings into clinical practice.

This unit will consist of online specialist lectures delivered by researchers and clinicians actively working in the haematology discipline, and eLearning resources. You will review and evaluate clinical and scientific literature in haematological diseases with a focus on clinical and translational medicine perspectives, and present this information in written form, and via oral presentations and posters suitable for a conference presentation. This unit will provide you with an in-depth clinical and translational research knowledge base to generate cutting-edge research questions, and to develop the ability to undertake inquiry-based research.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Identify the key cells, molecules and processes involved in the production of blood and its components

  2. 2

Evaluate the pathogenic mechanisms driving haematological diseases

  3. 3

Appraise tools and techniques to investigate specific haematological diseases

  4. 4

Evaluate appropriate tools and techniques to diagnose and predict patient treatment outcomes in haematological diseases

  5. 5

Critically appraise and communicate the key concepts and conclusions from translational haematology research literature to a professional audience

  6. 6

Develop a proposed research question grounded in a critical review of the clinical and scientific literature related to haematological diseases and their therapy

Workload and teaching

The Unit will be mostly based on online learning modules. The students will be required an average of 12 hours of engagement each week. Learning activities will be provided including reading materials, videos, quizzes, and moderated discussion forums and case studies analysis, requiring about 6 hours per week.
