Overview
This unit provides an introduction to the concept of mental health and the different types of mental illnesses commonly seen in the community and managed by mental health professionals. It will focus on different types of mental illness such as depression, anxiety, substance use disorder, psychoses and cognitive disorder. The unit will outline the symptoms experienced by people living with mental illness, the impact on their lives and how to recognise and respond to the needs of these people. It will introduce the student to the treatments that are currently used in the management of these disorders.
