Overview

This specialisation has had one or more changes made to it since publication on 1 October 2021. For details of changes, please consult the 2022 Change register.

Electrical and computer systems engineers develop electronic solutions to underpin a broad range of development supporting every aspect of engineering. In particular, graduates often employ their skills in the biomedical, computer systems, electronics, electrical power engineering, robotics and telecommunications industries. You will acquire skills, knowledge and experience in electrical and electronic engineering including the fundamentals of circuits, electronic signals and signal processing, digital electronics and systems on a chip, and the design of large-scale power and telecommunications systems.

In this specialisation, you will have the opportunity to also pursue a minor in an engineering discipline that complements electrical and computer systems engineering.

Availability
Electrical and computer systems engineering is listed in E3001 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Clayton as an undergraduate specialisation.

Structure

Parts C. and D. Electrical and computer systems engineering knowledge, application and professional practice108 credit points
You must complete the following core electrical and computer systems engineering units AND two ECE-coded units at level 4 or 5 from the core electives list below. NOTE: If you completed ECE2071 or ECE2072 as a First Year technical elective, you must replace the core with another unit at the same level or higher from the electrical and computer systems engineering technical electives list. NOTE: If you are studying in Malaysia, please refer to the information below for a specific unit requirement.

Core electives

12 credit points
In addition to the sixteen core units (totalling 96 credit points) listed above, you must complete two ECE-coded level 4 or 5 units (totalling 12 credit points) chosen from the list below. NOTE: To enrol in a level 5 unit, you must obtain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above.

Studying in Malaysia - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

6 credit points
To satisfy the compulsory broad engineering areas stipulated by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC), you must use one of the core elective units to complete ECE4053.
Part E. Elective study - Specialisation36 credit points

Studying single degree engineering

36 credit points
In single-degree engineering, you must complete 36 credit points of elective study after Year 1. In Year 2, the 12 credit points of electives can be level 1, 2 or 3 units from engineering or other faculties. In Years 3 and 4, the 24 credit points of electives must be level 3, 4 or 5 engineering units. You may use your elective study to complete an engineering minor that will complement your engineering specialisation or choose from your specialisation technical electives list.

Electrical and computer systems engineering technical electives

36 credit points
You may consider other engineering technical units chosen from the engineering minors, subject to meeting the unit prerequisite and/or co-requisite rules. NOTE: To enrol in a level 5 unit listed below, you must obtain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above at the conclusion of level 3 and be in your final year.

Studying a double degree with engineering

The 36 credit points of specialisation engineering technical electives normally required in the single degree have been credited towards the double degree structure and therefore not a requirement in the double degree courses.
