Overview

In the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), you will develop the knowledge and skills to practice as a professional engineer in one of the following branches of engineering:

  • Aerospace engineering*
  • Biomedical Engineering*
  • Chemical engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Environmental engineering*
  • Electrical and computer systems engineering
  • Materials engineering*
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Robotics and Mechatronics engineering

Your studies commence with the common first year. Completion of the common first year will develop your foundational skills for engineering while you sample from the various branches of engineering. In this year, you will develop your skills and knowledge of fundamental engineering through the completion of practical hands-on design-and-build activities. At the conclusion of first year, you will nominate your branch of engineering for further study.

After specialising in the second year, you will develop an in-depth understanding of the knowledge, techniques, tools and resources appropriate for your branch of engineering, as well as skills and knowledge of the application of engineering methods required to conduct, design and manage engineering projects.

Master's accelerated pathway (Clayton campus)

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is also available in a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Master of Engineering vertical double pathway. Designed for high-achieving students, this pathway option will allow you the opportunity to fast-track directly from the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) into the Master of Engineering. You will be able to reduce the total duration of your study by enrolling in a maximum of two Master of Engineering units whilst completing the elective components of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree. You will graduate with both a Bachelor's Honours degree and an Expert Master's degree. Please note that the Master's accelerated pathway is only available for the following specialisations:

  • Aerospace engineering
  • Chemical engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Electrical and computer systems engineering

You must enrol in the foundation units ENG1090 and/or PHS1001 if you have not completed the Australian VCE (Units 3 & 4) or equivalent Specialist mathematics and/or Physics with the required study score. Please seek course advice.
Note: If you are studying for a double degree and are required to take both foundation units, the total credit points needed for the double degree will increase by 6 credit points and you will need to overload by one unit in your Year 1 or Year 2 study.

Engineering fundamentals

12 credit points
Part B. Engineering design18 credit points
Parts C, D and E. Engineering specialisation knowledge, application, professional practice and technical electives144 credit points
Part D. Professional practice
Continuous professional development is part of meeting the Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competency Standard to be a Professional Engineer. The Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia have similar industrial training requirements. You must enrol in ENG0001 in your final year (if you are studying at the Clayton campus) or ENG0002 in the second semester of your third year (if you are studying at the Malaysia campus) and satisfy the professional experience requirements.
Part E. Elective study - First Year18 credit points

Studying single degree engineering

18 credit points
In the Common First Year, you must complete 6 credit points (one unit) from the list of First Year engineering technical electives below (availability of electives depends on your campus of enrolment). You will have an additional 12 credit points for electives in Year 1 that can be chosen from the First Year engineering electives list or from other faculties (provided you meet the unit enrolment rules) unless you are required to undertake foundational skills units from Part A. Depending on whether you need to undertake one or both foundational skills units, you may have 6 credit points or no credit points left for elective study.

Accreditation in Malaysia - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The Malaysian Ministry of Education requires all Monash Engineering students studying in Malaysia to complete ENG2801 to meet general studies requirements. In addition, some specialisations will require you to complete specific engineering units to satisfy the accreditation requirements of the Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia (EAC) or Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).

Studying a double degree with engineering

6 credit points
In the Common First Year of engineering study, you must complete 6 credit points (one unit) from the list of First Year engineering technical electives below, unless you are required to undertake a foundational skills unit from Part A. If you have to complete both foundation units, you will need to overload by one unit in your Year 1 or Year 2 study and increase the double degree's total credit points by 6 points. For guidance, please refer to the course progression map for the year you commenced the course.

First Year engineering technical electives list

NOTE 1: To specialise in biomedical engineering, you must use one of your electives in first year to complete BMS1021. NOTE 2: CHM1011 and CHM1051 are prohibition units against each other. You can only complete either CHM1011 or CHM1051. NOTE 3: If you complete an elective in first year that happens to also be a core unit in your chosen specialisation, you must replace the core with another unit at the same level or higher from the specialisation technical electives list.
Engineering minors24 credit points
A minor will diversify your skill set and add versatility. If you are completing the single degree in engineering, you can use your specialisation electives to complete a minor from a different engineering discipline. Whilst most minors are available in most specialisations, they are not available in the Biomedical Engineering and Software Engineering specialisations. Minors are also not available in the double degrees with engineering.
The handbook's description of this structure

The course develops through four themes that combine to underpin engineering practice: fundamentals and foundational skills, design, knowledge and applications, and professional practice.

Part A. Engineering fundamentals and foundational skills

This will develop your understanding of natural and physical sciences, mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences that underpin all engineering disciplines.

Part B. Engineering design

This will develop the engineering techniques, tools and resources for the conduct, design and management of engineering design processes and projects, both in the industrial setting and in the development of research experiments.

Part C. Engineering knowledge and application

This will provide in-depth knowledge of the specific engineering methods of a branch of engineering and will integrate the specific engineering methods and discipline knowledge into practice. You will develop skills to identify and apply knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline. Additionally, your studies will focus on your understanding and application of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in your discipline.

Part D. Professional practice

This will develop your skills in readiness for the engineering workplace. You will develop skills in effective team membership and team leadership, the use and management of commercially relevant data, and the legal responsibilities of engineers. This study will integrate the theme 'Engineering knowledge and application' with your specialist field of engineering.

Part E. Elective study

This will enable you to further deepen your knowledge of engineering or broaden your knowledge in another approved field. If you are completing a single degree course, you will have electives to add technical expertise in your engineering specialisation and/or complete a minor in an engineering discipline that complements your specialisation, thereby adding other skills to your repertoire.

Engineering minors are not available on the Malaysia campus. If you are studying for your degree in Malaysia, you must choose technical engineering units to fulfil the elective requirements of your engineering degree. Take note that there may be specific units you will need to complete in order to satisfy the local accreditation requirements.

The Master's accelerated pathway is an excellent way for you to fast-track your completion of the Master of Engineering. To do so, you select up to two level 5 units from E6014 Master of Engineering in the final year of your Bachelor's study. Note that the Master's accelerated pathway is available only at the Clayton campus.
