Overview

This specialisation has had one or more changes made to it since publication on 1 October 2021. For details of changes, please consult the 2022 Change register.

Chemical engineers transform raw materials into useful and commercial end products. This involves the research of raw materials and their properties, design and development of equipment and the evaluation of operating processes. You will acquire skills, knowledge and experience in chemistry and chemical thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, material and energy balances, as well as particle technology and process design.

In this specialisation, you will have the opportunity to also pursue a minor in an engineering discipline that complements chemical engineering.

Availability
Chemical engineering is listed in E3001 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Clayton and Malaysia as an undergraduate specialisation.

Structure

Parts C. and D. Chemical engineering knowledge, application and professional practice108 credit points
You must complete the following core chemical engineering units. NOTE: You may choose to complete either CHM1011 or CHM1051. If you have completed either unit as a First Year technical elective, you must replace this core unit with another unit at the same level or higher from the chemical engineering technical electives list. NOTE: If you are studying E3008 Engineering and Pharmaceutical Science double degree course, you will not complete CHM1011/CHM1051. Please refer to the information below for the specific replacement unit.

Optional integrated industrial project - CHE4164 and CHE4165

12 credit points
CHE4164 and CHE4165 combine to provide a year-long industry experience project only for select students in their final year. The units are in place of the two core final year project units ENG4701 and ENG4702.

E3008 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

6 credit points
Part E. Elective study - Specialisation36 credit points

Studying single degree engineering

36 credit points
In single-degree engineering, you must complete 36 credit points of elective study after Year 1. In Year 2, the 12 credit points of electives can be level 1, 2 or 3 units from engineering or other faculties. In Years 3 and 4, the 24 credit points of electives must be level 3, 4 or 5 engineering units. You may use your elective study to complete an engineering minor that will complement your engineering specialisation or choose from your specialisation technical electives list.

Chemical engineering technical electives

36 credit points
You may consider other engineering units chosen from the engineering minors, subject to meeting the unit prerequisite and/or co-requisite rules. NOTE: To enrol in a level 5 unit listed below, you must obtain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above at the conclusion of level 3 and be in your final year.

Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 refers to the fourth industrial revolution that is giving rise to the transformative digital industrial technologies connecting the physical world with the digital world. You are encouraged to select ECE2071, ECE2131 and TRC3500 in your electives if you are seeking to broaden your skills needed for the jobs of the future.

Studying a double degree with engineering

The 36 credit points of specialisation technical electives normally required in the single degree have been credited towards the double degree structure and therefore not a requirement in the double degree course.
