Overview

Linguistics and English Language is a major that is dedicated to the scientific study of language and its applications. Across the major, you will  explore the structure, diversity and use of languages across a range of settings, as well as the links between language, culture and identity. Language is central to human communication and throughout the major you will explore the ways in which linguistic analysis and description is applied to solve real-world problems in areas such as education, the justice system, business, IT and psychology. A particular strength of linguistics at Monash is the focus on language variation and multilingualism. Whether focused on English, lesser-known indigenous languages or cross-linguistic analysis, units explore the ways in which internal variation, language contact and change over time are hallmarks of all language varieties, and the challenges this raises for linguistic theories. The major has strong links to industry and leaves you well placed to pursue a variety of careers in Linguistics and related fields. If you major in Linguistics and English Language you are encouraged to gain the experience of learning a language other than their first language either through a major or minor.

Availability
Linguistics and English language is listed in A2000 Bachelor of Arts at Clayton as a major and a minor, and in A0502 Diploma of Liberal Arts at Clayton as a major.
