Overview
Applied linguistics is a rapidly growing field and increasingly recognised for its ability to solve language related problems at a micro and macro level. Professionals who can demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of language use in varied situations are highly valued in the workplace. The Monash Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics introduces graduates to the importance of language across a range of professional and personal, online and offline contexts, as these relate to globalization, multilingual and intercultural encounters. By integrating both online and offline contexts, the Graduate Certificate offers an innovative response to the growing importance of digital language and technologies. This is complemented by a focus on intercultural communication and the study of English (both grammar and use) in multilingual societies. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to apply newfound knowledge and skills to a variety of personal and professional contexts, with assessment tasks offering multiple opportunities for practical and relevant engagement with language related problems. The degree thus provides graduates with knowledge, understanding and skills to reflect upon and respond to the increasingly important role of language in multilingual and multicultural societies, including Australia. It is ideal for a range of professionals, including those working in or interested in a career in language teaching, interpreting, editing, marketing, communications, journalism and public relations, information technology, health and policy. The Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics can be taken as a standalone degree, whilst also providing an entry point in the Master of Applied Linguistics.
