Overview

This is a double master's program jointly offered by Monash University, Australia and the University of Warwick, United Kingdom. This international double master's program will allow you to complete, via 2.5 years, the full requirements of the Monash Master of Journalism degree, plus the full requirements of one of the Master of Arts degrees taught in the department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) at University of Warwick. If you commence the program at Warwick, you may be able to complete in a minimum of two years, due to the alignment of semester/term schedules.

The program will conclude with a joint research project, addressing the two degree study areas. You may commence your studies either at Monash or at Warwick and also have the choice of mobility in the dissertation period so that you can return to the institution at which you started or continue at the other institution.

The research project will cover both journalism and politics, and supervision and assessment of the project will be conducted via collaboration between Monash and Warwick staff.

Students studying the double degree
If you are in the double degree course you complete a total of 120 credit points across Monash and Warwick University. This includes:
- Part A. Core studies, Part B. Applied studies, Part C. Professional practice studies (48 credit points) at Monash, and
- Part D. Partner studies (48 credit points) at Warwick (Master of Arts degree).
- Part E. Research studies (24 credit points ). This will be a joint dissertation of 15,000 words in total or an equivalent journalism research project which is jointly supervised by one academic from Warwick and one academic from Monash and is jointly examined by both partner universities.

This course is structured in five parts: Part A. Core studies, Part B.  Applied studies, Part C. Professional practice studies, Part D. Partner studies, and Part E. Research studies.

Part A. Core studies

These units will immerse you in journalism studies at graduate level. Through a combination of academic and practice-based work, you will gain a solid foundation in all production technologies - print, video, audio and online - in metropolitan, regional and international contexts.

Part B. Applied studies

The focus of these units is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development.

Part C. Professional practice studies

Designed in association with industry experts, select from this suite of professional enhancement offerings to build essential competencies for your career pathway.

Part D. Partner studies

You will complete one of the Master of Arts degrees offered through the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) at the University of Warwick.

Part E. Research studies

These studies provide you with a further opportunity to advance your knowledge in journalism or related fields. You will complete the research project thesis in your final year at either Monash or Warwick.

Course progression map

If you are in the double degree course you complete a total of 120 credit points across Monash and Warwick University. This includes, Part A. Core studies, Part B. Applied studies, Part C. Professional practice studies, Part D. Partner studies (Master of Arts degree at Warwick and Part E. Research studies.

For the final 24 credit points of the Monash course you complete a research thesis (24 credit points). This will be a joint dissertation of 15,000 words in total or an equivalent journalism research project which is jointly supervised by one academic from Warwick and one academic from Monash and is jointly examined by both partner universities.

Units are 6 points unless otherwise stated.

Part A. Core studies (30 credit points)

You must complete 30 credit points, comprising:

Note 1: If you have completed an undergraduate major in Journalism, you may seek permission from the Course Director to replace one or more of the following units with APG5653 International journalism field school (from part B).

Monash Level C that is: IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall (no band lower than 6.5); or Pearson Test of English (Academic):  score of 65 overall with no band lower than 58; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 94 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 24, Listening: 20, Reading: 19 and Speaking: 20; or Equivalent approved English test

Notes for students

When enrolling in Part E course requirements, students will receive an invoice from both Warwick University and Monash University for the project/thesis unit.  Fee charges from each institution will be equivalent to 50% of the total unit cost and will align with each institutions’ fee schedule.
