The Master of Marketing and Digital Communications provides you with professional skills, specialist knowledge and key capabilities relevant to career pathways in a wide range of strategic communication and marketing related fields. This industry focused degree is designed for those seeking cutting edge theoretical knowledge and problem solving skills in marketing and communications. It develops core competencies in critical areas of digital marketing, strategic and crisis communications, audience research and data analytics which can be applied to the government, corporate, not-for-profit and community sectors.

Drawing on best practices locally and globally, you will be equipped to build effective and ethical communication and marketing strategies across local and international cultures and be responsive to a digitally integrated world. Taught by a combination of leading academics and practitioners in the field, you can also choose to develop deep knowledge in key elective disciplines from across the Indonesia campus.

You must complete 24 credit points of electives at Level 5 from other Monash Indonesian programs.

Note: If you are admitted at entry level 2, you are only required to complete 12 credit points.
Research pathway24 credit points
If you wish to complete a research thesis (15,000 – 18,000 words) and are enrolled in entry point 1, you will replace the capstone unit in Part B (12 credit points) and two elective in Part C (12 credit points) with the following units, in consultation with the course director.

If you are admitted into entry point 2 and wish to complete a research thesis (15,000 – 18,000 words), the replacement units will be determined based on previous study in consultation with the course director.

Notes: APG5084 Designing research is a co-requisite for APG5849 Research thesis A and must be completed in the same semester. Only students with a course WAM of 80 or higher will be eligible to commence the research pathway.

The course comprises 72 credit points structured into three parts: Part A: Principal study, Part B: Applied study and Part C: Advanced expertise.

Part A. Principal study

These studies draw on best practices within the broad realm of communications and marketing practice and research to further your understanding of communications and marketing systems both locally and globally. These studies engage with theoretical and industry based perspectives to provide an understanding of how organisations can connect and engage with their different stakeholders to achieve specific communication and marketing objectives. Studies focus on the opportunities and challenges posed by the emergence of digital media, globalisation and increasing levels of cross-cultural exchange. The impact of technological change on marketing and communication behaviour will also be critically analysed.

Part B. Applied study

The focus of these studies is professional and project work, focused locally or globally, that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development. In this part of the program you can also undertake higher level research.

Part C. Advanced expertise

The focus of these studies is to develop your expertise in disciplines from across the Indonesia campus. These will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to work and communicate across different industry and disciplinary contexts.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 72 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B and Part C
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2, you complete 48 credit points, comprising Part. A (24 credit points), Part. B and Part. C (12 credit points).

Note: Students eligible for credit for prior studies may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

The course comprises 72 points structured into three parts: Part A: Principal study (36 points), Part B: Applied study (12 points) and Part C: Advanced expertise (24 points).

Units are 6 points unless otherwise stated.

Part A. Principal study (36 points)

You must complete the following units (36 points):

  • ATI5366 Strategic communications in a digital era
  • ATI5374 Data analytics in communications
  • ATI5381 Crisis communications and issues management
  • MKV5916 Marketing principles in a digital world
  • MKV5926 Integrated marketing communications
  • MKV5881 Digital marketing

Note: If you are admitted at entry level 2, you are only required to complete 24 points.

Part B. Applied study (12 points)

You must complete one of the following capstone units (12 points):

  • ATI5100 Social impact lab (12 points)
  • ATI5856 Applied research project

Part C. Advanced expertise (24 points)

You must complete 24 points of electives at level 5 from other Monash Indonesian programs.

Note: If you are admitted at entry level 2, you are only required to complete 12 points.

Research Pathway (24 points)

If you wish to complete a research thesis (15,000 – 18,000 words) and are enrolled in entry point 1, you will replace the capstone unit in Part B (12 points) and two elective in Part C (12 points) with the following units, in consultation with the course director.

Monash minimum: Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
