Overview

Every industry needs people with strong business skills to manage and improve the day-to-day operations of organisations. To keep up with growing industry needs, companies are looking for graduates with strong business administration skills. Business Administration is the coordination of business functions and activities. In the Bachelor of Business Administration, you will build a sound conceptual and theoretical foundation from which you can build essential skills for a career in business. You will learn about core business functions and how they are coordinated to achieve business goals whilst having the opportunity to specialise in more than one business discipline. The BBA provides a unique environment with a close connection to teaching staff and other students and opportunities to develop ethical and socially responsible communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to succeed in a competitive and diverse world. Many subjects provide practical experience, real-world case-based projects, collaborative learning, interaction with experts from industry, and job-ready skills. This degree will equip you for careers in public-sector and private enterprises.

Course structure

Rules
In choosing your units you must ensure that you complete no more than ten units (60 credit points) at Level 1 and that you complete at least six units (36 credit points) at Level 3 of which at least four units (24 credit points) are Bachelor of Business Administration listed units from the Peninsula campus.
Part A. Core studies42 credit points
You must complete 42 credit points from the following units.

Notes:
- You must complete only one accounting unit, either ACB1020 or ACB1120. Students intending to complete a major in Accountancy must take ACB1120.
- You must complete BFB1001 or BFB2140. If you intend to complete a major in Accountancy and seeking professional accounting accreditation you must complete BFB2140 Business finance.
Part B. Major studies48 credit points
You must complete at least one business-listed major from the Peninsula campus. A major consists of eight units with no more than two units (12 credit points) at Level 1 credited to the major and at least three units (18 credit points) at Level 3 credited to the major.

Notes:
- No more than 12 credit points can be credited towards two majors, or a major and a minor, within a course. The same credit points cannot be credited towards more than one minor.

- Depending on the major you choose, you may have already studied one of the required units as part of your business specified study. If so, you must complete an additional business unit offered at the Peninsula campus.

- If you are intending to undertake an honours year, you should ensure you complete the specific units required for honours in your chosen major area of study.
Part C. Capstone studies6 credit points
You must complete one unit (6, 12 or 24 credit points) from the Faculty’s capstone portfolio of units, which includes:
- capstone units,
- consulting projects,
- international experiences, and
- internships (or industry placements).

Notes:
- If you choose a 12 or 24 credit point unit it will reduce the amount of points available for electives in Part D which may impact on your ability to complete a major using electives.

- If you are completing a major in Accountancy and seeking professional accounting accreditation you need to complete ACX3900. You can undertake more than one unit from the following lists, which will count towards your electives.
Part D. Elective studies48 credit points
You must complete 48 credit points of free elective study.

You can choose electives from within the Bachelor of Business Administration, including units to complete a second major (as listed above) or one or more minors (as listed below). Enrolment in Faculty of Business and Economics units at campuses other than your campus of enrolment is subject to there being spare capacity after students from that campus have enrolled.

You can also choose electives from across the University, including to complete a major or minor from another course if you have met the required prerequisites and there are no restrictions on enrolling in the units. You should also be aware of travel and timetabling limitations.

Notes:
- ECX3550 is a recommended elective unit offered at Peninsula.

- You can enrich your degree to hone your academic and professional skills with a range of Flagship Rich Educational Experiences (FREE), including the Research, Experimentation and Discovery, Monash Innovation Guarantee and Global Immersion Guarantee. These flagship rich educational experience units may be credited utilising your free electives if approved by the faculty. There are both 6 and 12 credit point unit options available.
The handbook's description of this structure

This is a comprehensive course, structured in four parts:

Part A. Core studies

These studies will provide you with a broad foundation for your study of business and expose you to several business disciplines. It will contribute breadth to your knowledge of business and develop your understanding of multi-disciplinary decision making in organisations. It will also give you the opportunity to learn more about each discipline before finalising your choice of major.

Part B. Major studies

Your major studies will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise. You will develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of your major area of study.

Part C. Capstone studies

This is designed to consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the study of your major.

Part D. Elective studies

This will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your chosen major, or business more broadly, or study a second business major. Alternatively you can select units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol.

Course progression map

The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.

You must complete units as specified in Parts A, B, C and D (144 credit points): a minimum of 96 credit points of business study over Part A, B and C, and 48 credit points of electives in Part D.

In choosing your units you must ensure that you complete no more than ten units (60 credit points) at level 1 and that you complete at least six units (36 credit points) at level 3 of which at least four units (24 points) are Bachelor of Business Administration listed units from the Peninsula campus.

Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise specified.

Part A. Core studies (42 credit points)

You must complete the following seven units (42 credit points):

  • ACB1020 Accounting in business or ACB1120 Financial accounting 1*
  • BFB1001 Foundations of finance or BFB2140 Business finance**
  • BTB1010 Commercial law
  • ECB1101 Introductory microeconomics
  • ETB1100 Business statistics
  • MGB1010 Introduction to management
  • MKB1700 Fundamentals of marketing

* Only one accounting unit may be completed from ACB1020 and ACB1120. If you intend to complete a major in Accountancy, you must complete ACB1120.

**You must complete BFB1001 or BFB2140. If you intend to complete a major in Accountancy and seeking professional accounting accreditation you must complete BFB2140 Business finance.

Part B. Major studies (48 credit points)

All applicants must satisfy the equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites.

VET Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma graduates:
Applicants will require a minimum 50% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not be sufficient to meet admission requirements.

Monash University Foundation Year average: 60%

Higher education studies:
Applicants will require a minimum 50% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. A minimum of two single units must be completed in order to meet minimum admission requirements.
