Overview

Commerce is the cornerstone of the modern economy. This course offers a world-class education in the economic, political, legal, social, cultural, and technological principles that exist around the world.

The course is designed to provide you with high-level skills in a range of key business disciplines. It will provide you with the skills to work in and manage different functions across an organisation. It blends a conceptual theoretical framework with practical applications, providing both a broad basis for business and commerce study and the more specific knowledge of your selected major(s). It provides choice and flexibility by allowing you to major in up to two different areas of business and commerce.

You will be well equipped to seek employment in both private and public-sector enterprises.

In choosing your units, you must ensure that you complete no more than 10 units (60 credit points) at Level 1 and at least six units (36 credit points) at Level 3, including four units (24 credit points) at Level 3 offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Notes:
- Depending on the major chosen, you may have already studied one of the required units as part of your core studies. If so, you must complete an additional business unit to bring the combined business study to at least 96 credit points from the Faculty of Business and Economics.

- If you are intending to undertake an honours year, you should ensure you complete the specific units required for honours in your chosen major area of study.

- Some units within some of the business areas may have prerequisites that require additional unit enrolment. Please bear this in mind when planning your major.

- No more than 12 credit points can be credited towards two majors, or a major and a minor, within a course. The same credit points cannot be credited towards more than one minor.

You must complete 48 credit points of elective studies.

Electives can be chosen from within the Bachelor of Business and Commerce, including units to complete a second major or minor(s). Enrolment in Faculty of
Business and Economics units at campuses other than your campus of enrolment is subject to there being capacity after students from that campus have enrolled.

Electives can also be chosen from across the University, including to complete a major or minor from another course if you have met the required prerequisites and there are no restrictions on enrolling in the units. You should also be aware of travel and timetabling limitations.

If you are in a double degree course, some units required for the other degree are credited as electives towards this Business and Commerce degree.
The handbook's description of this structure

This is a comprehensive course, structured in four parts:

Part A. Core studies

These studies will provide you with a broad foundation for your study of business and commerce and expose you to several business disciplines. It will contribute breadth to your knowledge of business and commerce and develop your understanding of multi-disciplinary decision making in organisations. It will also give you the opportunity to learn more about each discipline before finalising your choice of major.

Part B. Major studies

Your major studies will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of your major area of study.

Part C. Capstone studies

This is designed to consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the study of your major.

Part D. Elective studies

Elective studies will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your chosen major, or business and commerce more broadly, or study a second business major. Alternatively, you can select units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol.

Course progression map

The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.

You must complete units as specified in Parts A, B, C and D (144 credit points): including 96 credit points of study in Parts A, B and C, and 48 credit points of elective studies in Part D.

In choosing your units, you must ensure that you complete no more than 10 units (60 credit points) at level 1 and at least six units (36 credit points) at level 3, including four units (24 credit points) at level 3 offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise specified.                                                                                     

Part A. Core studies (42 credit points)

a. You must complete the following seven units (42 credit points):

  • ACW1020 Accounting in business
  • BFW1001 Foundation of finance
  • BTW1042 Business law
  • ECW1101 Introductory microeconomics
  • ETW1001 Introduction to statistical analysis
  • MGW1010 Introduction to management
  • MKW1120 Marketing fundamentals

Note. If you intend to complete a major in Accountancy, you must instead complete the following seven units (42 credit points) 

  • ACW1120 Financial accounting 1
  • ACW2220 Management accounting 1
  • BFW1001 Foundations of finance 
  • BTW1042 Business law
  • ECM1953 Principles of economics
  • ETW1001 Introduction to statistical analysis
  • MGW1010 Introduction to management

Part B. Major studies (48 credit points)

You must complete at least one major from the list below.

Part C. Capstone studies (6 credit points)

You must complete one unit (6 credit points) from the following:

  • BEW3001 Ethics and sustainability in a business environment
  • BEW3102 Experiential learning project
  • BEW3110 Work experience program
  • BEW3555 Integrative business practices
  • ACW3900 Global issues in accounting*
  • MKM3202 International study program

*ACW3900 is only to be completed as a Capstone unit if you are intending to complete a major in Accountancy.

Part D. Elective studies (48 credit points)

Electives can be chosen from within the Bachelor of Business and Commerce, including units to complete a second major or minor(s). All applicants must satisfy the equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites.
VET Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma graduates:
To be considered, applicants will normally require at least 60% average. Preference will be given to students whose prior studies are related to the course in which they are seeking admission. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements.

English language

Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

Successful completion of the Bachelor of Business and Commerce may provide a pathway to the one year honours program Bachelor of Business and Commerce (Honours) (B3702). To be eligible to apply for entry into the Bachelor of Business and Commerce (Honours) (B3702), you must obtain a distinction grade average (70%) average or above in 24 points of studies at level three in the relevant area of business.
