Overview

In this double degree you will learn to apply your thinking in a commercial capacity and develop the skills required to solve complex problems, while developing a depth of expertise in economics.

This gives you a unique skill set. For example, economics provides the foundational understanding of finance and actuarial studies, but combined with majors in actuarial studies or finance you will have substantive knowledge across all three.

Economics is the science of allocating scarce resources to maximise people's welfare. Economists study both the microeconomic decisions of individuals, business and government, and the macroeconomic behaviour of the economy as a whole. Two specialisations provide a professional education in economics: economics and economics policy, and mathematical economics and econometrics. Both specialisations are designed to encourage logical thought and detailed analysis of economic issues that can be adapted to a range of careers.

Course structure

Course requirements
Where there is double up of units across the two single degrees, these units must be replaced by another unit. Up to six of these may be replaced by a unit from across the University, providing the prerequisites are met and there are no restrictions on admission to the units. You may also be able to use these replacement units to take a 12 or 24 credit point project, international experience or internship, or undertake a minor in a different discipline from your major.

You will complete your Bachelor of Economics specialisation and one major in the Bachelor of Commerce. Where you have space in your degree you may complete a second major with no more than two units contributing towards both of your chosen majors or towards both a major and the specialisation.

You can enrich your degree to hone your academic and professional skills with a range of Flagship Rich Educational Experiences (FREE), including the Research, Experimentation and Discovery, Monash Innovation Guarantee and Global Immersion Guarantee. These flagship rich educational experience units may be credited in place of your additional commerce unit if approved by the faculty, or alternatively utilising your replacement units. There are both 6 and 12 credit point unit options available.

If you are enrolled in a double degree it may be possible to use 6 credit points from each degree to do the Global Immersion Guarantee (12 credit points). For information on eligible double degree combinations please see Global Immersion Guarantee.

Commerce

B2001 Bachelor of Commerce is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts. In the double degree course you complete:

Part A. Commerce specified study

This will contribute breadth to your knowledge of commerce and address the graduate course outcomes. It will also give you the opportunity to learn more about each discipline before finalising your choice of major.

Part B. Commerce listed major (excludes Economics)

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of your major area of study. Due to the double degree structure, the Economics major is not available in this course.
