Overview

This course provides professional education for those wishing to become econometric professionals. It has a strong emphasis on developing analytical skills and offers a solid grounding and professional competence in aspects of commerce required for careers in the corporate sector, government and the professions.  

Build a high level of expertise in one of the following themes:

  • Macro and financial econometrics
  • Micro and health econometrics 
  • Data analytics for energy and climate

Focus your studies from the start, blending a conceptual theoretical framework with practical applications and cover basic discipline material through to more specialised discipline requirements. 

Applied econometrics provides you with coursework and research components, and will equip you with the required skills in econometric techniques and research experience to undertake major applied econometric projects. You will engage in a comprehensive curriculum across applied econometrics, time series analysis, financial econometrics, macroeconometrics and microeconometrics, and develop skills to design and implement applied econometric projects for the government and business sectors. This program may be used to prepare high performing students for a subsequent PhD program.

Course structure

Part A. Advanced preparatory studies12 credit points
You must complete 12 credit points from the following.

- You must complete either ETF5320 or ETC5341;
Part B. Core studies36 credit points
You must choose the Applied pathway or the Research pathway (there is a hurdle requirement for entry into the Research pathway).

Research pathway

36 credit points
Research pathway entry requirements:
To be eligible for the Research pathway you must meet all eligibility requirements to enrol in the research project unit ETC5860.

You must complete the following units

Specified research pathway electives

18 credit points
Part C. Elective studies24 credit points
You must complete 24 credit points of elective study. Electives may be chosen from:

- Units not already completed in Part B above;
- Up to two units from the list below;
- Either Level 4 or Level 5 units from the Faculty of Business and Economics (which may include study tours, consulting projects or industry placements) or units from across the University, provided you have met the relevant prerequisites and there are no enrolment restrictions.

Notes:
-If you are admitted into entry point 2, you must complete 12 credit points.
-ETX5900 Business statistics cannot be taken in this degree.
-The Course Director can guide you to appropriate electives based on your area of interest.

Research pathway

24 credit points
You may be required to complete the below units as prerequisites, depending on your unit selection in Part B.

You may complete either ETF5330 or ETC5346. Only one of these units can count towards the 24 credit points required.

The Master of Applied Econometrics is structured in three parts. Part A. Advanced preparatory studies, Part B. Core studies and Part C. Elective studies

Part A. Advanced preparatory studies
 
These studies will introduce you to econometrics at advanced undergraduate and graduate level, and are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field.

Part B. Core studies

These studies will develop your capacity as a critical and creative professional who is able to apply your knowledge of a specialised area to provide discipline based solutions.

Part C. Elective studies

These studies will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your specialisation, or more broadly, select any units from across the university in which you are eligible to enrol. You can also use these studies to select elective units that provide a research pathway towards a Doctor of Philosophy course.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at entry Level 1 you must complete 72 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B and Part C

  • If you are admitted at entry Level 2* you must complete 48 credit points, comprising Part B and 12 credit points from Part C.

Note: Students eligible for credit for prior studies may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

*Due to unit availability and progression requirements, Entry level 2 (full-time) is restricted to semester one commencement only, and is not available for mid-year (semester two) intake. 

Research Option

Due to availability of units and progression requirements, the research pathway is available to full-time students who commence the course at:

  • Entry Level 1 commencing semester two of an academic year

Part-time students interested in the research pathway should contact the Course Coordinator.

Students undertaking the double degree with the Master of Global Business or the Master of Advanced Finance cannot undertake the Research pathway in the Master of Applied Econometrics.

You must complete 12 credit points from the following.

-ETF5560; and

-One of the following units: ETX5200, ETC5345 or ETC5420.

Note: ETF5560 is a research project unit.
