Overview

The Master of Business Information Systems is a postgraduate degree that prepares you for a career in an information systems field such as business/system analyst, IT/IS consultant, IT product/project manager, and information manager.

The rapidly changing business and technology landscape entails constant digital innovations. Offered by the Faculty of IT (the only faculty within Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight universities dedicated to IT), MBIS is specifically designed to enhance and update your knowledge and skills on the emerging technology and their business applications, the design and management of digital innovations, as well as the socio-technical dynamics of changes.

MBIS is distinctive in its holistic emphasis on two key pillars, namely strategic, transformational and ethical information systems, and information systems innovation, design and analytics.

The course will offer state-of-the-art conceptual frameworks to make sense of digital innovation and disruptions, as well as the practical tools and techniques for hands-on application to complex problems. The course offers an industry experience project where you have the opportunity to interact with experienced IT professionals, and work in a multidisciplinary team with other postgraduate students from the Faculty of IT. The course also offers a research-oriented option where you complete a minor-thesis research project.

The handbook's description of this structure

The course is structured in three part: Part A. Foundations for advanced business information systems, Part B. Core master's study and Part C. Advanced practice. All students complete Part B and Part C.

Part A. Foundation studies

These units provide an introduction to information systems and business concepts, including system design and analysis as applied in professional practice. You will learn basic software programming and development concepts and database technology.

These units are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field.

Part B. Core studies

These units draw on best practices within business information systems (BIS) to gain critical understanding of the theories and practice relating to responsible digitalisation, digital transformation, BIS strategy, governance and management, ethical BIS innovation and design, business intelligence and analytics, project management, as well as a choice of data and archive, and business process and decision-making behaviour.

Part C. Applied studies

The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work in the broad realm of business information systems.

You have two options:

  • a program of coursework involving advanced study and an industry experience studio project.
  • a research pathway including a thesis. If you wish to use this master's course as a pathway to a higher degree by research you should take this option.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 96 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B and Part C.
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 72 credit points, comprising Part B and Part C.

Note: If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete the higher credit-point option.
